A Race to the Bottom of the Marianas Trench!

It would seem that James Cameron (Raise the Titanic, Avatar) and Sir Richard Branson (Virgin Everything), as well as two other teams are pulling out the stops to be the first to the bottom of the Marianas Trench! If mumblings from Cameron’s team are to be believed, he will be heading out first in the next few weeks.

Marianas TrenchThis is a dangerous venture in that the depth at Challenger Deep is about 36,000 feet. That’s as much as Mount Everest is high! And this article states that the pressure at such a depth is almost 16,000 pounds per square inch which is “equivalent to 8,000 elephants standing on a Mini Cooper.” I’d pay to see that illustrated!

We’ll be watching the news on the outcome and will report back what we find.
