I was hooked on Star Trek (became a Trekkie) the first time I watched it on
my little black and white television in 1966. All I had were rabbit ears
for an antenna and the picture was snowy, but I never missed it!
Even though both characters were fun and interesting to watch, there were a
lot of fundamental differences between Captain Kirk and Captain Picard.
You must consider the rather large change in special effects that occurred
between the two shows. The Next Generation had the advantage of over 20
years of advancement in special effects. So with this advantage, Picard
was able to be the more cerebral of the two and less of the action hero that
Kirk played. Picard had Data to aid in his efforts to out think his enemy
and gain peaceful solutions. Although Kirk had Spock (another intellectual
guy with a mind-meld), he was always willing to jump right in to the fray in
order to subdue his enemies. Besides the Captains, Scotty and Sulu were my
favorite characters in the original series and Worf, Geordi and counselor Troi
were my favorites in TNG.

My dad and I had two shows that we loved watching. One was Gunsmoke and the other was Star Trek. I was probably 5 or 6 and this would have been about '75 or '76, so they were in syndication. It didn't make a difference how many times they showed re-runs, we would sit and watch and it would still be as funny as the first time we watched it. Bones lamenting how he's a doctor, not a tree surgeon, or Spock and that raised eyebrow. How's that Rock? The people's eyebrow belonged to Spock long before DeWayne Johnson came along. I think that both captains are great in their own right, but there will always be just one for the Enterprise and that's James Tiberius Kirk
